How to write Calligraphy Work?

There are 5 steps. You cannot miss any of the steps in order to come out with something presentable. It costs lots of money, time, attention and effort.

Here is a final work at my poor home done by poor me.

Let me explain the steps in detail.

  1. Folder Paper.

A piece of paper for calligraphy has no lines, frame and margin. You need to estimate how you are going to position the characters in a piece of white paper. Then you can fold it to create the marks for margin, lines, etc. I usually leave 10cm for top margin, 15 cm for bottom margin, 8 cm for side margin.

Most of the paper is not symmetrical. A lot of the folding is based on estimation.

2. Practice.

Find some used paper in the similar material of the paper you are going to write on. Practice and practice.

PRACTICE with heart MAKES PERFECT. You can write for 10 hours but no result. You also can practice 1 hour and come out with a wonderful work.

3. Write.

I like to write in a very quite environment. “Mom, could you please stay on your bed in your room without making any noise for 2 hours?” This is what I usually told my mom if she happens to be at home with me when I was writing. This is her reply for most of the time. That’s why I don’t like writing calligraphy at home now. There are less and less opportunities for me to go home so I want to spend the precious time with them instead of writing calligraphy alone. However, sometimes my parents ask me to write one or two pieces of works so that they can keep them or give to my grandparents.

4. Dry.

Separate everything and dry them. It is very important to keep the brushes away from your final work. I cannot remember how many times my grandpa had destroyed my work with a brushes. Well, special mark! 😛

You should keep work flat on the floor or table to dry it. Please don’t roll it up immediately and don’t hang it up. The ink is liquid.

5. Frame.

One word, EXPENSIVE. But it keeps your work long lasting. The most expensive frame I have had is few hundred dollars. It was a 5 meters long and 1 meter wide work, and transported by a truck.
